The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced its 18-player Indian squad for the five-match Test series against England starting June 20, 2025. In a major announcement, Shubman Gill is the new captain of the Indian Test squad, while wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant returns as vice-captain.

The appointment indicates a leadership change and a new renewal of direction for youth and long-term vision. Gill has been tied to the future of Indian cricket leadership. Gill is now on board and has a good amount of room with experience and youth. Pant is back in a leadership role following a comeback from injury and a successful run of domestic and IPL cricket.

The team contains a mixture of experienced players and young talent. KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sai Sudharsan provide stability at the top, while together, well-performing players Abhimanyu Easwaran and Karun Nair continue their return into the Test arena. Andhra all-rounder Nitish Reddy earns his first call-up with an exceptional domestic season.

Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav will form India’s spin attack with Washington Sundar, an all-rounder who adds depth. The fast bowling group includes Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj, alongside Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh and Shardul Thakur.

The series begins at Headingley, Leeds, from June 20 to 24, followed by the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, from July 2 to 6. The iconic Lord’s will host the third Test from July 10, with the final two matches scheduled at Old Trafford (July 23–27) and Kennington Oval (July 31–August 4).

This series represents an important moment in India's World Test Championship campaign and will challenge the new leadership in English conditions. The fans and experts will be excited to see how the Gill-Pant combination will impact the future of the team in the longest format of cricket.
