IPL 2025 – Match 56: Gujarat Titans Clinch Last-Ball Thriller Against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede
In a thrilling match that ebbed and flowed throughout the contest, the Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 3 wickets off the final ball through a calculated chase to a reduced DLS target of 147 runs in 19 overs.
The Gujrat Titans pulled off the glamorous win and kept their slim playoff hopes alive through a calm knock from captain Shubman Gill, who was awarded Player of the Match for all around accomplishments — a 43-run knock and three critical catches.
Mumbai Indians Innings: 155/8 (20 overs)
Mumbai Indians opted to bat first after losing the toss, but their innings didn't start well. It was the second ball of the innings when opener Ryan Rickelton fell for 0, with a second wicket in the third over when Rohit Sharma fell for just 7 runs. After this, Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav paired up, and lead a mini counterattack.
Jacks scored a fluent 53 off 35 balls, striking five fours and three sixes; Suryakumar scored 35 off 24 balls. Together, they recorded 71 off 43 balls, making up for the poor start. But it would not last, as both players would go in rapid succession, with Jacks falling to Rashid Khan caught and bowled, and Suryakumar fell to Sai Kishore shortly after, and the middle of the MI order fell apart.
Captain Hardik Pandya scored 1; Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir each scored starts, but could not convert. The late cameo of Corbin Bosch with 27 off 22 was useful and pushed the total to 155/8 in 20 overs.
Among bowlers for GT, Sai Kishore was the standout bowler with 2/34, and other bowlers Rashid Khan, Coetzee, Siraj, Arshad and Prasidh Krishna each recorded a wicket to stop MI getting away.
Gujarat Titans Innings: 147/7 (19 overs, Target: 147 DLS)
After revised target of 147 in 19 overs due to rain, GT were briefly in trouble when they lost Sai Sudharsan to Trent Boult, however a strong partnership of 72 from Gill and Jos Buttler stablized GT. Buttler showed good touch, scoring 30 off 27, before falling to Ashwani Kumar, debuting as a concussion replacement for Bosch.
Gill anchored the chase with 43 off 46 and absorbed any pressure as wickets began to flow after his wicket fell. After rain intervened at 107/2 in the 14th over with DLS, GT's target was revised.
Sherfane Rutherford smashed a quick fire 28 off 15, but GT needed 15 more runs from the last 2 overs with only a couple on wickets left. Jasprit Bumrah (4-0-19-2) bowled exceptionally well and nearly swung the match back towards MI with a brilliant spell.
With only 1 run needed off the last ball Arshad Khan held his nerve and sprinted for a single after Gerald Coetzee (12 off 6) had provided the finishing push.

Captain’s Take
Shubman Gill (GT):
"It was a tough chase under pressure, especially after the rain. Credit to the bowlers for keeping MI to a chaseable score and to the middle-order for finishing it. We needed this win for the momentum going into the final leg."
Hardik Pandya (MI):
"We were 15–20 short. We lost wickets in clusters and couldn’t capitalize in the middle overs. The boys fought hard in the defense, but it wasn’t our day."
What’s Next?
With this dramatic win, Gujarat Titans keep themselves in the hunt for a playoff berth, while Mumbai Indians will rue their middle-order collapse and look to bounce back strongly in their remaining fixtures.
