Najmul Hossain Shanto is a Bangladeshi cricketer who began his cricket journey at the Clemon Rajshahi Cricket Academy. Shanto is a left-handed top-order batsman. He was born on 25 August 1998. He is married to Sabrin Sultana Ratna. Shanto is the captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team for Tests and ODIs and the former captain of T20 Internationals.
Najmul made history at a very young age when he struck a double-century in a one-day match at his school. Representing the Rajshahi Division he reserved his maiden first-class century in the 2015 season.
In 2016, his career kicked off when he was selected to play Under-19 World Cup. He stood out as one of the best players for Bangladesh, earning back-to-back Man of the Match against South Africa and Scotland. He smashed 259 runs, which helped Bangladesh achieve third place in the tournament. In the 2016-17 Bangladesh Premier League he made his T20 debut playing for Comilla Victorians on 8th November 2016.
The 2017-18 National Cricket League saw the highest opening partnership in the domestic first-class match in Bangladesh which involved Shanto. Playing for the Rajshahi Division, Najmul, and Mizanur Rahman scored 341 runs against Dhaka Metropolis creating history. In the 2020-21 Bagabandhu T20 Cup, he scored a century for Minister Group Rajshahi against Fortune Barishal.
Hossain became the first Bangladeshi Player to score more than 500 runs in a BPL season. In the 2022-23 Bangladesh Premier League, he was selected to play for Sylhet Strikers and won the Player of the Tournament award for his outstanding performance.
His consistent performances at the domestic level earned him a place in the Bangladesh Test squad. He made his debut in the Tests on 20 January 2017 while playing against New Zealand. In September 2018 he made his One Day International debut for Bangladesh against Afghanistan. That same year, he was selected in Bangladesh’s team for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup.
