Temba Bavuma was born on 17 May 1990 in Langa, Western Cape, South Africa. He is a South African international cricketer who plays for the Gauteng team in the domestic circuit. He is a right-handed middle-order batter. Temba is the current captain of the South African cricket team in ODI’s and test matches. Temba is the first black African to captain the South African cricket team.
Born in Langa, a township outside the CapeTown, Temba's father is Vuyo Bavuma, and his mother is Phumza Bavuma. He completed his schooling at South African College Junior School in Newlands and St. David’s Marist Inanda, a boys school in Sandton.
Temba started his cricket career by playing in domestic cricket in 2008. He made his debut for the Gauteng team playing against the Eastern Province.
The 2010–11 Temba made his first franchise debut with the Lions. He scored 242 runs at an average of 60.50 in 4 games during the first season of the Supersport Series, including a man-of-the-match score of 124 not out against the Knights. He scored 637 runs at an average of 53.08 during his second Supersport season in 2011–12. Temba was the fifth-highest scorer in the Sunfoil Series in 2012–13. He scored 714 runs at an average of 39.66 in 2013–14, placing him on number sixth on the Sunfoil Series scoring list.
In May 2017, Temba declared that he was moving his franchise to the Cape Cobras. Temba was appointed as the captain of the Highveld Lions in June 2018. He was included in Gauteng's 2018 Africa T20 Cup squad in September. In the same month, he was included in the Durban Heat's squad for the first edition of the Mzansi Super League T20 tournament. Temba was named in the Jozi Stars roster for the 2019 Mzansi Super League tournament in September 2019. After that, Temba was included in Gauteng's team in April 2021, before the South African cricket season of 2021–2022.
In September 2022, Temba signed a contract for Sunrisers Eastern Cape to replace Tom Abell for the upcoming tournament in February 2023.
Temba's International career started in 2014 when he debuted for South Africa against the West Indies on 26 December 2014. He became the first black cricket player to make a century in a Test match for South Africa on 5 January 2016. In the second test of the 2015–16 series against England, he scored an undefeated 102 runs in Cape Town.
