Augustus Alexander Patrick Atkinson, popularly known as Gus Atkinson, is an English cricketer. Born on 19 January 1998 in Chelsea, London. The right-arm fast bowling all-rounder plays for Surrey and England. Gus started his professional career by making his first-class debut in the Bob Wills Trophy on 28th August 2020 for Surrey. Later, he made his Twenty20 debut for Surrey in the 2020 T20 Blast.
Atkinson made his List A debut on 22 July 2021 during the Royal London One-Day Cup in the 2021 season. In April 2022, he signed a contract with the Oval Invincibles for the 2022 season of The Hundred. He also played for Surrey in the County Championship 2022. With his pivotal performance during the 2022 season, he was again brought by the Oval Invincibles in the 2023 season of The Hundred.
Gus’s talent didn’t go unnoticed in domestic cricket, and he earned his senior call-up in the England Cricket Team for the ODI and T20I series against New Zealand. With his impressive debut on 1st September 2023 in the fourth match of the T20I series, he recorded figures of 4/20, which is the best by an England men's bowler on debut. His performances didn't go unnoticed, as he signed a multi-year contract extension at Surrey on 18th September 2023. He was also part of the English squad for the Cricket World Cup 2023 held in India.
In December 2023, he was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders in the auctions of the 2024 Indian Premier League for INR 1 crore. However, he withdrew from the tournament a month before due to England’s home test season. During England’s 2023 tour to India, he got his first call-up in the English Test Team in December 2023.
Gus was selected in the English Test Team on 30th June 2024 for the West Indies tour. His test debut came in the first test held at Lord’s on 10th July 2024, where he demonstrated his capabilities by taking 7 wickets in the first innings, followed by another 5 wickets in the second innings. He made it onto the Lord's honours boards with bowling numbers of 12/106, the best by an England rookie in 134 years. He was awarded Player of the Series for...
