Charith Asalanka, better known as Kariyawasam Indipalage Charith Asalanka, was born on 29 June 1997 in Elpitiya, Sri Lanka. He is a Sri Lankan professional cricketer who serves as captain for the Sri Lanka team in ODI and T20 matches. He is an aggressive left-handed batsman and an off-spin bowler. He plays only in the limited-overs formats of the game for the national team and is the 14th T20I captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team.
Asalanka toured England in 2013 as an opener and became the top scorer in each innings with 92 and 31 in a three-day match against an under-17 team at Loughborough. In 2014–15, he captained the Sri Lanka under-19 squad in matches against Bangladesh and Australia. He was Sri Lanka's top scorer (225 runs at an average of 45.00) and second-highest wicket-taker (eight wickets at 21.00) in the five-match limited-overs series against Bangladesh under-19.
In 2015 and 2016, he was named the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year. He received this honor twice. In 2016, he also became the 1st player to score a century in both the 2-day and one-day matches of Lovers Quarrel.
Asalanka made his T20 debut for the Singhalese Sports Club in 2017-18. He was included in the team for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament held in April. He was included in Kandy's team for the 2018 SLC T20 League in August. With ten dismissals in six games, he was Kandy's top wicket-taker in the competition. He was selected by the Jaffna Stallions for the first Premier League season in October 2020.
In March 2021, he became captain of Sinhalese Sports Club as they won the 2020–21 SLC Twenty20 Tournament, the first time they had won the tournament since 2005. Asalanka’s team defeated the Police Sports Club in the Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament on March 24, 2021, and Asalanka scored 178 runs from 145 balls, 16 boundaries, and five sixes in an incredible undefeated century. With 339 runs, Sinhalese Sports Club won by a margin of 31 runs. With a successful partnership with Avishka Fernando, Asalanka defeated Colts Cricket Club on April 1, 2021, in the Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament, scoring a match-winning century at 101 not out from 89 balls while chasing 278 runs. With 68 balls left, Sinhalese Sports Club had won by eight wickets.
