Australia's Bowling Quartet of Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, and Lyon is on the Way to Becoming the Best in Test history

Australia's legendary bowling quartet Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon—has cemented its legacy as one of the greatest in Test history. With over 1,500 wickets combined, their skill and consistency have been instrumental in shaping Australia's dominance in the longest format.
The Australian bowling quartet of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon has now solidified its place as one of the greatest Test bowling lineups in cricket history. Together, they have taken more than 1,500 Test wickets, each bowler contributing to Australia's success. In 2024, they also bowled as the first team to select a bowling attack comprised of four bowlers with 250 Test wickets each, and they are on the cusp of departure, with Lyon approaching 600 wickets (currently 553) and Starc close to 400 wickets (currently sits at 382).
This fearsome foursome has been a major factor in Australia’s consistent win in the World Test Championship (WTC). The four have made major contributions to numerous wins against good opposition: a 3-1 series win against India, a 3-0 home series win against Pakistan, and a 2-2 Ashes series in England. Their consistency in taking wickets and putting teams under pressure has had an enormous impact on Australia’s success in Test cricket.
As Australia gears up to face South Africa for WTC final at Lord's, performance from this quartet of bowlers could be the pivotal point. Based on the experience and skill level, this is arguably the most ferocious bowling attack you could ever wish for in the history of Test cricket. It may be a little odd to say this quartet has never been in a Tournament Winning XI - Hazlewood was not available for the previous WCT final, Lyon did not play in the previous ODI World Cup in 2023, and in 2021 T20 World Cup.
Australia's bowling unit has achieved a ludicrous number of amazing individual milestones and has also been invited to share in Australia’s success at the peak of the game. Their success as a unit is worthy of discussion in any context of superior bowling combinations throughout the history of Test cricket.
